Set in the historic city of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais, this photographic series by Flavio Sousa Cruz engages with the Reinado, one of Brazil’s most symbolically dense Afro-Brazilian traditions. Emerging from the cultural matrix of the Congado, the Reinado articulates a ceremonial language where devotion, historical memory, and performative identity converge within the baroque urban fabric of a former colonial mining capital.
Rooted in religious brotherhoods formed by enslaved and freed Africans, the Reinado operates as ritual, procession, and historical narration. Cruz’s photography captures the intertwining of Catholic iconography with African-derived musical structures and rhythmic systems. The coronation of kings and queens, alongside the disciplined movement of guardas, transforms public space into a stage where ancestry and belief are materially enacted.
This series approaches the Reinado not as static ethnographic documentation, but as a visual inquiry into embodied history.
